MUST FOLLOW SPACE DESIGN PRINCIPLES YOU CAN INCORPORATE IN ANY PROJECT
If you are looking to decorate your apartment like how a interior design professional would approach it, here are some of the most popular design and deocr principles that form a part of every curriculum. If you look closely at well decorated spaces you will notice these principles and perspectives used in some way of the other. You too can incorporate any of these principles in your home’s decor schemeand achieve the right results.
Principle of Unity
Spaces are linked together with unity, continuity and harmony. With the right variation of these three aspects the space will unify all the elements in the decor scheme. The concept behind it is to create the right visual flow without causing any interruptions to the space. While decorating multiple rooms begin by looking at the overall picture as a unified whole at the start itself.
Principle of Balance
The principle of balance refers to the even distribution of elements and objects in the space to create the right visual balance to a room. We recommend using symmetrical balances to achieve the right visual equilibrium. Take the example of a mantel in a living room. Most interior specialists would suggest placing a larger object just above the mantel such a painting or a mirror and balancing it with matching objects on either side. This is a simple yet common example used in most spaces. This draws your attention away from looking at only the mantel area and leads the eye upwards that creates a relaxed feel which is created when asymmetrical balance is incorporated. Another form of balance is achieved through radial balance which is an arrangement that is achieved by a drawing the eyes attention to the focal point of the room and placing furniture around it.
Principle of Rhythm
As rhythm as synonymous to music it is to interior decor as well. It related to repetitive decor elements in a room as how a beat of a song would be rhythmic. This is achieved with similar patterns in the decor with the use of colors, shapes, sizes and also textures. Rhythm is achieved through repetition, progression followed by transitions. Keep in mind that there is a fine line to cross having the decor scheme being too repetitive which can upset rhythm. Progressions are best achieved by grouping objects varying in sizes and shapes to create smooth flowing progression. Transition is best described as an uninterrupted flow of design from one element to another. This is commonly achieved through windows, furniture, arched doorways etc.
Principle of Contrast
Contrast in commonly referred to the visual impact the room has to the eye and how the brain perceives. Contrast is commonly achieved through colors or with the use a large object as a focal point in the space. Contrast can be achieved in the form of shapes as well – circles and squares as an example.
