An interior design statement is in essence a proposal that covers a bird’s-eye view of the concept placed to a client. Often when a project is bid for the design statement envisages all the visual components planned by the designer in the form of a presentation. Although the statement is visual, keep in mind that the designs shouldn’t not be isolated to speak for itself! In Goa, clients require concepts to be precise thus is the need of a solid statement is a must to win-over a client.
The concept statement must convey your ideas and vision for the space effectively. Every project being unique your proposal must include facets on how you went about designing the space and the approach on how design challenges were handled.
The client must be able to notice how you plan to work with the physical elements in the space while you demonstrate your thought process in doing so. Present it like your mission statement that is clear and precise. Every interior designer has their own style in composing a concept statement that includes all the vital pieces of information. Preparing these statements on a regular basis will eventually bring about your own style, so initially you need not worry too much on being confused deciding the direction you want to take.
An interior statement shouldn’t be complicated for a client to grasp. Keeping it brief with carefully worded description that easily communicate the areas of focus and concept of your ideas. Avoid selling yourself as an advertisement and focus more on putting across a solid proposal. The objective you are trying to achieve and the intent of your design has to be explained. Display the technical approach to your concepts such as design fundamentals, science and principles of interior designing employed to achieve the goals of the project.
Every space poses it own challenges and individuality thus addressing client requests should be at the forefront of the concept statement. Keep in mind the client’s instructions and work alongside those requirements all along. These inputs may have a large influence on the direction of your plans for the space and must be followed to the letter for the statement to turn into a successful presentation.
Avoid over-describing and flowery language in your presentation. There is no harm in using a touch of it here and there but overuse will not help in clearly putting a point across. Use of adjective in your speech or statement has to be limited as well. This would mean minimizing the use of words such as ‘beautiful’ or ‘marvelous ’ that are ambiguous and don’t clearly describe ideas from a technical perspective. Keep personal opinions to a minimum to avoid the risk of it not being relevant to the proposal.
